Chevrolet has taken the surprising step of inserting a demotion clause into its seven-year jersey sponsorship agreement with Manchester United.
United has been looking for potential new sponsors, and US automaker General Motors is unlikely to renew its £ 59m per year contract, which ends at the end of next season.
Sportsmail learned that the agreement signed in 2012 before Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement included financial protection if United suffered an unthinkable relegation to the Championship.

This would only take effect after two consecutive seasons off the main flight, industry sources said.
United declined to comment. A spokesman said: "Chevrolet is a fantastic partner and we will continue to work with them to activate and maximize sponsorship." Aon, the main past sponsors of 2010-2014, is believed not to include such stipulations.
United fired three managers – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho – during Chevrolet's association with them. Sportsmail reported that the league's indifferent performances have impressed GM bosses with its heavy investment.
Chevrolet is only the fifth shirt sponsor in United history and club leaders are confident the sixth will be eclipsed financially.
