421 horsepower, 51 kgfm of torque and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 4 seconds. If we were in the 1980s, the numbers above would certainly come from a V12 engine – or a V8, if it were the 1990s or 2000s.
As we live in 2019, these indicators can already be obtained by a "simple" 2.0. In this case, the most powerful 4-cylinder series production engine in the world.
It equips the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45S, which only arrives in Brazil in March, still undefined, but has already been evaluated by the G1 in Germany, in a route of more than 800 km between the cities of Stuttgart, home of Mercedes, Munich. and Frankfurt, when this city hosted the most important auto show of the year.
He is the gateway to the world of AMG, the sports division of the German brand.

Along the way, a few hundred kilometers were on smooth asphalt roads, long straights, and civilized drivers – and no speed limit.
Even so, it was possible to exceed 250 km / h. This, by the way, is one of the differences from CLA 45S to CLA 45 without the “S”, which has “only” 387 hp, against those 421 hp mentioned at the beginning of the text. In the most powerful option, the top speed is limited to 270 km / h, 20 km / h more than the “basic” model.
In fact, having two power settings is one of the characteristics of the new generation sedan, introduced in Europe a few months ago, at the end of July. It is the same philosophy already adopted in vehicles prepared by AMG, the sports division of Mercedes.

Distinguishing CLA 45 from other siblings is as simple as differentiating a cat from a leopard. Starting from the common configurations, AMG promoted a considerable sedan plastic.
The package includes the typical prep harrow with 12 vertical bars, more pronounced bumper, generous air intakes, wider wheel housings to accommodate 245/35 tires and beautiful 19-inch wheels.

The pattern is repeated at the rear, with a bumper air diffuser and two circular exhaust (9 cm in diameter) each with the AMG signature.
The ensemble, especially with this red paint, is extremely tasteful, without seeming too exaggerated or “anabolic”.
Mercedes-AMG CLA engine 2.0 has been turned 180 degrees – Photo: André Paixão / G1
In the previous generation, the CLA's 2.0 engine yielded 40 hp and 2.5 kgfm less. Engineering work to increase power compares to that of ants. With minor changes here and there, the numbers have improved considerably.
One of the main actions was to turn the engine 180 degrees horizontally, of course. With that, turbo and exhaust manifold migrated to the rear, near the fire wall.
Already the admission was shifted forward. This whole arrangement, says Mercedes, has optimized the pipeline path.
Also new is a dual injection system – direct and indirect. The spray, which can spray gasoline up to 200 bar directly into the combustion chamber, joins the system that still pushes fuel into the intake manifold. It comes into play in a second moment, in a complementary way.
The advantage is to have the best performance of two systems that operate at different times.

Motor plate contains signature of engineer responsible for assembly – Photo: André Paixão / G1
Mercedes can change the position of all parts of an engine, but one thing remains unchanged in the AMG sports division: each engine will be touched by only one engineer, responsible for the entire assembly.
At the end of the work, a nameplate with the proud signature of the technician is installed on the plastic cover.
In addition to all the engineering work, there is acoustic news. The CLA debuts in the compact line a system that sends an engine sound emulation to the cabin to enhance sportiness. Snoring varies according to the selected driving mode.
Even though the 4-cylinder 2.0's snoring doesn't have the charm of a V8, the artificial sound seems exaggerated, as if the CLA 45S wanted to assert itself as a member of the AMG line.
This is not necessary, since his performance numbers already accredit him as a sports car. And most of the merit comes from the engine itself, which talks very well with the 8-speed double clutch gearbox.
Exchanges are fast, and always happen at the right time. If the driver thinks he is better than the machine, he can still make the changes by means of fins behind the steering wheel.
But it is advisable to let the exchange work on its own. In the sportiest mode, it even holds a gearshift until the engine reaches 7,000 revolutions per minute.
In this situation (and even before), the passages are accompanied by a dry crack directly from the exhaust vents.
The rated vehicle also had the optional AMG Ride Control, which allows you to adjust the suspension on three different maps, from a more comfortable to a sporty one.
The function is very useful, as a very hard car in the city, for example, turns out to be quite uncomfortable, while a too soft vehicle on roads and curves is not fun either.
In both conditions, using the right hit, the CLA goes very well. It does not mistreat the occupant column in the city, nor does it cause insecurity at higher speeds.
Round air vents and colorful LEDs give the cabin charm – Foto: Divulgação
The CLA (along with the Class A) 45 AMG is the gateway to Mercedes sports cars. That's why your cabin is a full-scale reproduction of larger models like the CLS.
The essence of Mercedes is present in the large diameter steering wheel and straight base, the seat adjustments in the door and the shift lever in the steering column.
Round air vents give a touch of sportiness – complemented by LED interior lighting, which can be configured in different colors to the customer's taste.
Too many buttons bother CLA 45's cabin – Photo: Press Release
But two aspects of the cab get the driver's attention. One is the large frame that surrounds the screens that serve as the instrument panel and multimedia center. The other, not so positive, is the massive presence of buttons scattered around the cabin.
If you consider the keys on the steering wheel, the sum will certainly be over 20. In this regard, Mercedes seems to go against other manufacturers, which have virtually abolished the buttons of their most modern cars.
What's worse is that most of the key functions can also be controlled by the media center itself. As if that were not enough, there is still a "touchpad" that ensures a second redundancy.
Redundant systems are often very good at aviation or retention of important data as they provide greater security. But in a car, this conservatism is perfectly expendable.

The hassle of buttons is soon rewarded with the CLA's generous dose of intelligence. The equipment package, at least in the evaluated specimen, is quite comprehensive.
After a preset speed, the cruise control (ACC) maintains a distance to the vehicle ahead. This is nothing new, and there are several cars in Brazil with such a system.
But Mercedes ACC also includes traffic sign recognition. If the driver sets the system to 110 km / h, and the road limit changes to 80 km / h, the CLA automatically reduces it. The opposite is also valid.
But there is an even more interesting technology. When lane maintenance assistance is active and the driver wishes to change, the car can maneuver on its own as long as there is no other vehicle nearby.
During the trip on good German highways, it was possible to use the feature on a few occasions, proving the smooth operation of the technology, which gives greater safety to maneuvers.

There is no guarantee that the system will work in Brazil. Also because the signs on the country's highways are still quite precarious.
However, considering that AMG cars are often packed with technology, it would not be surprising to find the gadgets here.
Mercedes has not yet talked about prices, but the value will certainly be higher than the $ 349,900 charged by the previous generation, which went out of line earlier this year.
Considering that the C-Class 63 AMG, superior model, comes out for $ 499,900, it is not difficult to imagine that the new CLA will be around $ 400,000.
For this price, it is difficult to find any vehicle considered a direct rival to the CLA. A possible but far-off competitor is the BMW M2, a two-door coupe that features a 410-hp 3.0-cylinder six-cylinder engine.
But CLA still has the advantage of its overwhelming performance, yet it can take the whole family with it.
